Someone please explain this misnomer... Suggestion Box

  I understand that we call a pair of socks a pair, because there are two separate units....
  
  what I don't understand is why we call a pair of pants, a pair..
  a few folks suggested it was because there were two legs...but, a shirt has two arms and we don't call it a pair of shirts.
