I tried to start a new topic, but because I'm not a paid member I can't?
Anyways, I just wanted to know what type of PC everyone is riding when they are not riding.
This old gaitwae PC is slower than slime, and I'm looking to upgrade to a better mousetrap.
Also Dialup versus Cable or Satellite, which works for you?

I bought a Dell 8400 system through the Dell site. Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB HDD, Dolby 5.1 sound, DVD Burner, XP Pro, 19" monitor, and the upgraded video card for around 1400. Oh, and it had a modem in it- couldn't get em to sell me one without it. It's substantially faster than the 1.6 GHz e-machine on the other end of the room.

I have a LAN DSL connection that's kinda flaky right now- but just try to find somebody that sells DSL modems (other than the helpful I$P), much less someplace that has impartial reviews.

The main problem with discount systems is all the "free" crap and "trial versions" they dump on em. Takes two weeks to uninstall all that stuff. I don't worry too much about warranties buying from Wally World or Best Buy if I'm short on bucks- by the time you have trouble with a computer these days, it's so obsolete it's not worth fixing, warranty or no warranty. That's not to say they never break, just that they go obsolete so fast. I locked in a quote for thirty days on the gateway site on one of their faster midrange systems (NOT a closeout or super cheapie), and when I went back to order it, they didn't carry that model- didn't even have it in their database anymore. In three weeks!

Hi Char How are you! Im not crazy
about dell.
at home i have a AMD Atholon XP Computer. It might be even faster than a Pentium 4. Im not sure what your looking for Today on line you can say exactly what you want on your computer EX: do you want a cd drive or dvd player or not or floppy disc drive or not that would be up to you. There is a site called TigerDirect dot com you can browse around in there and see what you like.
Hope this helps
Jade

Is that enough info Char???

I am with ya Bikeman, I have the exact unit myself, less the comcast, add surround. And at work hell I don't even know, was I suppose to? ...lol
Was that you staring at my back____at DELL??

Char~ I do not recommend Walmart for a computer.....think about it? Hmmmmm...
but it really depends on what you want it to do for you. (Bikeman, no!!) I very much recommend Dell. Trust me on this, once you talk to them, get them to put only what you want on it, then negotiate it. They will deal with you.
Been with them for 11 yrs

Char, always on high speed connection is always better. I have to have it anyway to download large audio wave files for the work I do. I used the local cable company at one time. Problem with that is cable does sometimes go out, and they didn't have 24/7 support. I have mine through my ph*ne company now. Cable only goes out if ph*ne services goes out, which doesn't happen in this area. Also 24/7 support. My computer was built for me by a local, so can't help there.
