Anybody who has had neck surgery:
Please feel free to share your experiences here.
#1- Did it improve with surgery?
#2- Did it stay fixed, or go back to the same or worse years later?
#3- Did scar tissue make it worse years later?
I know the stats on neck surgery and have been reluctant to do it, but now I will do whatever it takes.
DD- All ears!

Hope you're feeling better by now. After road rash a few times and other events: In the 70's I started out w/ monthly adjustments. Now I use activator treatments, essential oils (wintergreen), MSM, went to acupuncture for 5 years. I hear OmegaXL is like the best ever!!! I do natural, alternative modalities to stay happy & healthy. If it wasn't for all I have done, progessively, most probably I would be using a cane. Most folks think I'm about 30 because I'm flexible and liveley. Also eat lots of fresh fruit and veggies. They work!! Go to a natural food store and buy green powder food. Ask the store clerk. They will help you. Health is our biological birthright. Get yourself a juicer and go on a veggie juice fast. They have books in the library on it you can check out for free. Be proactive and try to stay away from pharmacuticals..........
well geewiz DD, I was hoping you would be feeling better by now, but wll tell you this in confidence: " You ARE going to feel better pretty darn quick" !!!!!! JUST YOU WATCH AND SEE HOW YOUR SPIRITS ARE GOING TO SET SAIL LIKE AN EAGLE SOARS, AND YOU ARE GOING TO BE SMILIN LIKE AN ANGEL JUS LANDED ON YOUR SHOULDER TO RUB THE PAIN AWAY.
Remember the strength that you have in yur mind that has its own way of casting out any doubts or fears that would try to slow you down, and that you are able to overcome anything that you desire to put on the run.
And if you are needin to call on a bit of outside help for additional encouragement, just look around and wonder if a stranger has rode his hillbilly ass into town to lend a hand. : )
Get your cruisin gear out of mothballs and be ready to ride like there is not a thng thatcan stop you from doing what you want.
I really hope your pain is manageable w/o a scalpel. Surgery can really be bad news on any part of the spine. For me I waited until every conservative approach was exhausted. Finally the doctors all came up with the same news. My spine was so fragile that if I was ever in an accident or fall I could be parralyzed. That scared me enough to consent for the knife. It to six surgeries to fuse the damn thing and eleven years later I'm just now starting to feel a bit better. Try EVERYTHING before the knife. Even the stuff that sounds like BS. Stay away from too many pills,or your gonna have another problem. Nothing worse than a legal addict with a jacked up back. Oh and yeah scar tissue winding its way around the nerves can be another problem. Each time you get cut on scar tissue accumulates. the more involved the surgery the more scarring. This is a late post to an old problem but I really hope your feeling better by now.Remember Survival is optional. Best of health to you all.
I went to my doctor with sever pain in my neck, shoulder, and arms as well as numb fingers all he did was give me pain meds and steriods to take. I couldn't take the pain any longer so I went to the ER and got an MRI just to find out I have bone spurs herniated disk and protruding disk all in my neck..So i had to go to another doc to get an EMG done . Right now i'm in a waiting game.. My doc told me what i have isn't bad enough for surgery. He told me i have to take it easy that. I could heal on my own or have it get worse and then need the surgery but thank God i've been pain free for 2 months without the pain meds(I hate taking them)
I had neck surgery back in '92...
Was mis-diagnosed for 2 years (got worse and worse, with no help from anyone). What finally made it clear what was going on was an MRI - nothing else will show those soft parts of your discs and spinal cord. I get _really_ suspicious of someone that wants an x-ray (hey, I'm not a doctor - but those things didn't show squat for 2 years, and are just cheaper to do... worthless for neck pain IMHO).
Anyway, instant releif. Great surgeon at Loyola Chicago. Scar? Oh yeah, I remember feeeling it swallowing for about 6 months, but couldn't hardly see where then, and even less now.
2 years of mis-diagnosis meant I had to work for years to get my strength back (where nerves had been messed with), but stronger than I probably ever was in my life.
If there's a 'tear' - it ain't gonna heal - got to pull it; if not, you can try to get the disc to heal naturally, and sometimes with therapy it will. Shots can help reduce inflamation, and give things (with therapy) a chance to heal... but sometimes that's not enough.
Every fusion you have reduces how much you can move your head left/right by 12.5 degrees.
Good luck, and hope your results are as good as mine (C5-C6 fusion).
Hope you're doing better also! I got my MRI and Emg's done. Same story: Surgery means fusion and a diminished ability to ride my own bike. So, I'm going back for physical therapy and seeing a trainer at the gym.
Onward and upward...

Also, I would appreciate any hugs, good energy, etc anyone wants to send my way. DD- Hurting big time in Southern CA and all ears!
Irishrose, I just saw your entry about neck surgery, whic h I had seen it bacl in late 04, anyway........I had to have it done, was having extreme pain in my left shoulder area, couldnt do anything but lay around & definitely couldnt ride. I had a ruptured disc in my neck, # 5 & 6 vertebrae were fused together. I was down from Jan 04, surgery in May 13th and was riding agaain July 4th weekend. Would do it agian in a heartbeat, went in the front of my neck, cant even tell it, incision was in a crease. If you have had it done I hope you are doing well.
Doc still needs to fix your pc , so we can come up next weekend, cause I am goin to stay to help Ug a week from now. I can do non-invasive healing work on you. Maybe Paw can join us?
Big hugz, and much compassion from my heart.
I want to hook up with you and chat on the ph*ne about all this. Soon, ok?
Funny thing: I waited for months for that MRI, now I am on the opposite coast and hoping to visit other states before I go home.
I heard you r going to be brave soon and get your neck fixed again by the docs.
Sending good mojo, and if there's any way I can do some healing work on you, I would be happy to!
I am at Docs's right now and you are only a 4 hr. drive away.
Ask, and you shall receive!
Call or email me if you want-k? Thinking about you every day. My only suggestions: Don't overdue. And: Make the work space as comfy in every way you can. Ha, Resting at work is almost impossible. It's gotta get better-and soon.
My doc said 'no' to the shots due to the stats. Am waiting for more tests. (still).

Seeme- How long did the shots last for you? Sorry if I missed it in the thread. How many have you had? Going to run this by my doc...
in my neck i had 2--they allowed me to feel better so that i could get physical therapy , which helped alot
before them i had what i call double ice pick migranes in my eyes everyday at around 3 pm--then it was in a dark room laying on the floor--i couldn't take the bed because it would move and moving hurt--now i'm much better and i still have problems and bone spurs in my neck
