The association I ride with are putting together an unofficial Iron Butt Ride, 1000 miles in 24 hours in June 2008. I'll be leaving Copperas Cove, TXD to Spearfish, SD. Could any of ya'll give me any advise that ya'll wouldn't mind passing on. I am already trying to get in the mind set of the lil' engine, I think I can, I think I can, do this. HELP!!!

some things I've learned... more than 4 bikes to a group is a drag.... watch your breaks.. combine food, gas and bathroom stops.. make them short esp in the beginning... take advantage of daylight hours and do as many miles as possible before dark.. forget about high speeds.. a steady rider can do more miles than someone that races... don't go crazy on the bike before the trip... an endurance run is no place to be testing new parts... don't forget your cell phone (just in case you don't pay attention to the previous tip..ha) stop to go faster.. if you are not able to maintain a steady speed, you are tired. Stop at a rest area or gas station and take a nap.. a picnic table can be stretched out on and makes a nice bed for a short nap.. get gas before you need it.. taking a detour looking for gas while on empty will blow the time you saved by not stopping... If you get too tired... use your head and pull over for some rest.. you are not racing the quarter mile.. a windshield is nice.. OK..OK I don't use the things.. but could be coerced on my next iron butt.. be prepared for all weather because your going to find it.. or it'll find you.. scratch that.. iron butt riders find the weather.. don't forget extra sox and some quick high energy food.. OK that's it.. enjoy

Spend a lot of March, April, May and early June RIDING!!! Sounds like a great run. I already know I can't participate (unless I don't have a job by then, and then I couldn't afford it!!) - but I could ride to Spearfish, and be there with cold beer when Texans arrive!
