This blog is of a serious note. On sunday my son contacted me to let me know he was returning home from Iraq on Labor Day. He is a young Marine who is serving his second tour, and is scheduled for a third in February. On the same day a dear friend called me and asked me to come over. When I arrived there were two Marines at her house, and in tears she told me that they had come to tell her that her son, David, had been killed in Iraq by an IED. She cried on my shoulder for an hour, and I really didn't know what to say. As a Marine Officer I had written letters home, but at this time and this place, I found myself bereft of words. Let's remember those young men who are risking their lives on a daily basis. Whether or not we agree with the war, we can agree that the young men serving there are being asked to pay the ultimate price for us. Semper Fi, Marines. There's now another Marine guarding the gates of heaven. May you find peace, David.

For those interested, David was laid to rest today, Sept.11, 2006. His funeral was attended by the Patriot Guard, and his mother said to tell all of you how much she appreciated your attendance. At ease, Marine. Your work is done. Please pray for all the other servicemen who are daily putting their lives on the line. Semper Fi.

When I was told that my sisters only son was going over there, I smiled and told him how proud we are,then went to the ladies room and cried.He is just like a son to me.

Glad too hear your son is on his way home , and deep sorrow and graditued for you friends loss and sacrafice .I Also extend that too all the families that have loved ones serving or that have lost loved ones too this and all wars .Many Many Thanks

Give her my condolences, from another former Marine. May the young man guard the gates well. And I thank your son with all my heart. My nephew is on his first tour with the Marines there now. I pray for him and all the rest of them over there every day. I have too many friends there to count.

I am glad you son is coming home safe and sound. My 2 nephews are Marines. One did 2 tours in Iraq. I am not sure if he is going back. I am also sorry to hear of your friends sons death. My prayers are with all the young men and women defending our freedom! God bless

Thank you for sharing this story. My heart goes out in prayer to your friend and all as well. No one really understands until you are living in that situation and it's a tough one. I can't relate to her pain but I can relate to almost losing a son when he was shot six times at Easter and God gave him another chance in life. I am fortunate, but the pain is unbearable, a mothers worse nightmare. This is a very hard time for ya'll. You just being there for her although not knowing what to say is all words can express and sometimes that is just enough. She is lucky to have a true friend. I hold you in my prayers.

Thats sooo sad. Tooo many of our troops have given thier lives for this, in my opinion, a war that should not be happening. George lied about WMA and our boys are over there dying because of it. I support our troops, don't get me wrong, They are the bravest of the brave. But as far as I'm concerned, G. Dubya can f-uvk right off.

A huge thank you to your son and all his comrades.....I dont readily agree with the war, as most ppl dont nowadays, but I absolutely support our troops and what they do. I have been to 3 funerals for young ppl killed in the war. Youre a great person just to be there for her to cry on your shoulder. Whether you had words for her or not....you were there. Thats what matters.
I would like to add to all the parents out there. Please teach your children to have the respect for these soldiers and for the pride we have in our country that you have. My children know to stand and take off their hats when the National Anthem is played, we cheer and clap for the armed forces in parades. We saw a group of soldiers come off a plane carrying all their gear and as they came by, my family and I stood and clapped for them.....then so did many, many other people. My sons immediately took off their hats to them. Please let your children learn and feel the pride you have.

As a military 'brat', spouse, mom (still have one on active duty) and now a (military) Widow, my "heart and soul" go out to her and the family. I will keep her 'close in heart' and add her to my prayers!
