Has anyone applied for a passport in the past month or two? I decided to take my youngest son and my daugher to the caribbean for their Easter vacation. I book the hotel and flights. Me and my daughter went to the County Store at the mall one night before work to get our passports. No problem. I take my son a few days later. We fill out the papers, blah blah blah. One little problem. He is under 16 and needs his father's signature. His father lives in Maine. I fill out the "special circumstances" portion explaining that my ex husband lives in Maine, does not have contact with the child and did not provide his residential info. I also sent a copy of the order for custody. I am primary residential (cusodial) parent. I got a letter today telling me to provide a notarized statement from my ex husband giving permission for my son. WTF!! What part of I HAVE NO CONTACT WITH THIS JERK did they not understand? Can the government explain to me why the US Citizen who follow procedures and live here, suffer the consequences for the illegals and nutcases? Why can't we make it tougher for those who come in here?

I didn't know that under 16 was good to 21, I must have been given the wrong info, thanks for the correction.
Philadelphia is one of the thirteen regional offices that can issue within 2 weeks, but in places like here, Cincinnati, there is still a long wait. The backlog in processing made a lot of news after the decision to require passports to the Bahamas etc. They were simply overwhelmed by the flood of applications.

Cinn I had ours in 2 weeks. This was a last-minute decision. Couldn't do it ahead of time. You don't have to re-apply if they are under 16. They are good for 5 years.

I suggest new applicants file 4-6 months before they plan on exiting the country..The passport web site says they are processing within 4 weeks, but I have friends who have been waiting almost 4 months for theirs. The paper here suggested applying 6 months before departure. Expedited service says 3 weeks (with an extra fee), and those traveling within 2 weeks must go to a regional office. There are only 13 regional passports agencies in the entire country that can issue a passport within 14 days.
Here's a kicker...you'll have to re-apply for your child again if he is under 16, when he hits age 16. and pay again!

OMG Cinn!!! He kidnapped the child. The poor kid. Well I finally got the passport. I am 7 minutes from Philly so I hand delivered the extra docs that they wanted. Then they called my office and I explained everything. They issued it and mailed it priority. We are leaving Wednesday. Can't wait!!

I always tell agencies that ask about my kids father that he is an absent parent and noboby knows where he is, or better yet, I tell them I am a single mother and never looked for the father... Shuts 'em up real quick..some agencies see so much of the "baby daddy' drama that they don't push the issue, better than all that red tape, though i don't know if it would work with a passport application.
They do this so children are not taken out of the country without the other parent's knowledge. A few years back there were big problems with immigrants marrying Americans and having kids, then taking the kids out of the country after a divorce. There is a lady in my area who's ex-husband took her son to Egypt 5 years ago, and she has not seen or heard from him since... Now that's a mother's nightmare!

Jersey, I hate to tell you this...but good luck getting a passport before Easter. The wait now is usually several months for a passport to get prcoessed. They are so far behind. If you live near a big city with a processing ofice you can pay a large fee and have it processed quicker. For me in Ohio, that would mean the closest place to do the quick thing would be in Chicago, about an 8 hr drive. Good luck! I hope you live close to one of the few processing offices that can do them right there, that day.
