Just got back from the court where I am contesting support payments for my adopted son. He is 17, quit school, has a beautiful little daughter, lives with the mother and is working full time, yet the court thinks I should still pay support. This is Michigan, of course. How does this work in other states?
I agree with Nightnurse because sometimes leaving home and having a baby does not make you grown up as it seems! I got a brother in low who still needs support from his family since his girlfriend left home with his child and let him down! So, I think parents should keep an eye to their children even when they left home to get prepared.

You can declare him an emancipated monor at age 16 in MI if he is not living with either parent!
I say that?s some injustice, working full time and getting support from you. He may as well file for unemployment to get triple whammy. This has nothing to do to be a man. Next time go vote...
18 in England, but they are trying to make parents responsible for the children and their keep till they are 21. tryign to keep them in compulsory education til 21. Keep them off the state benefits. There will be riots and I do not know who will be rioting first the parents or the frustrated children.
When will they leave home. I thought the whole point of parent hood was making your kids adult and independent. Not if the state has anything to do with it.

Waht happened to child labour. Why can't we send them down the coal mines and working in sweat shops? Children in other countries where they have to grow up are far more developed.
In 16 Century children were exepcted to leave home and work and be fully independent at age of 6 or 7, and they could do it. What happened???
Childhood is getting longer. Will be supportign them in your old age and contributions will be taken out of your pension.
Adopted...that makes him yours until 18 even if he is not living with his mom...unless he lives with you. Seems a shame but loop wholes suck sometimes.
In NJ age 18 is considered an adult in the eyes of the law and in legal and illegal issues. I think there is a child support law here that covers the child until age 21,also if the child is in college. As long as they are living at home with their Mother, especially if age 17, it doesn't matter if they are working or have a child, they are still considered to be under her guardianship and support.
