It has nothing to do with strength. I've seen some 5 foot nuthin's riding Road Kings. Plus some of the dudes aren't all that buff.

I can think of one reason that some ladies don't ride their own besides the obvious one that maybe they can't afford a bike. Some of them are just "old school" and in their day it wasn't appropriate to ride their own. Times are changing and so are attitudes. If they are so inclined and want to ride their own then power to them. They'll find out soon enough that there's a lot more to riding than just time in the saddle.

Thank goodness for good people like you , midnightrider. I was on my first poker run last year. Just had my new bike for a week prior and really nervous about riding in a group as I normally ride alone. The bike kept stalling out and 200 people were buzzing by and laughing except for one. His encouragement meant the world to me. I about left and said screw it, these people are major jerks. He showed me where I needed to adjust my carbeurator, gave me a few other pointers and rode with me off and on, the rest of the ride. We all need help once in a while. Everyone had to learn to ride at one point. It snows me there are so many jerks that i have met since I took up biking. On the other side, I have met a good number of really great people also. Still there seems to be big lines drawn with women, like men wanting submissive women and yet if you ride your own you need to be rather gutsy and independant natured to do so. For many men those attributes are not a turn on. Men say they want a woman who camps, loves to ride long and hard with them, well that generally isn't your standard primping femme with manicured nails. Which leaves the question, do men really know what they are searching for and does the ideal exist? And why all the hostility to women riders? I wonder on some level if men feel intimidated or is it not really ground that they want a woman to walk on ...like biking is thier domain. I am not saying this is all true, but I just wonder about it sometimes. What are all your thoughts on the matter?

Here in Idaho, they offer an all women's STAR class. Less intimidation. In the class I took,in PA, it was mostly men that dropped out or were asked to leave. six years later, I helped a fellow get his license. The one intructor came and talked with me. He said I am the only woman, out of 6 in that class, that is actually riding. He knew I would ride because I had more fun than anyone that has ever taken the course.

Midnightrider you are awesome! I hope that when I get my HD there is somebody like you around! I have already taken a riding safety class and gotten my permit, but am waiting for $$$ flow to improve. I honestly never thought about having my own bike until about a year ago. I always thought it was a "guy" thing. Yvonne

The stats say now 1 in every 3 riders is a woman..so they are there. Lots of women rides around here. BTW , Carol's technique for picking up a bike really works. Used it last year.

Women can do anything. Anyone that can go through childbirth you shouldn't f*# with. And if she drops her ride unless she is in bum f&% you know that place in Egypt...There will be dudes there in a heart beat to help her lift it.

well Justyforya, you apparently miss a lot when you go to the PBR, andthe PRCA events. They almost always bring out the mechanical bull for the "Bikini Bull Ride" at all the big events, and at many of them it turns into a topless bull ride. In fact the Red Bluff Roundup was the subject of a lot of controversy a couple years ago because of the lack of clothes on some of the women. The CCPRA events seem to be the wildest for this though

While on a local Hog Chapter ride we went to a beach and three people dropped their bikes. Two of them men and one, a very slim young woman. No one laughed at the men, but they all laughed at the young woman. I helped her pick up her bike and we all got back on the road. Since I was the tail gunner, I waited until she filled her bike with gas and told the others to keep going to the restaurant. When her and I got to the restaurant, she dropped the bike again, and started crying. She was so upset that ahe was going to call a tow truck and return the bike to the dealership and sell it on consignment. I told her to hang up the phone and I would tell her why. I was so happy that she listened to me and I taught her how to pick up her own bike (1200 HD Sporty) using her legs and hips (very useful technique for heavy bikes). I told her to spend some time with me on the road and I would teach her as much as could so she could gain the confidence she needed to ride by herself and not be ashamed if she dropped the bike again. She now rides a full size HD Electra Glide, and she can out ride most of the guys in the Hog Group. She is probably 110lbs soaking wet and 5'2" tall but she has the heart and strength of a Lioness. She thanks me all the time for not laughing at her that day, but teach her the things she needed to give her the confidence and techniques to ride safe, aggressive, and defensive all at the same time. To this day I love watching her handle a bike that is almost 10 times her own weight.
